Learn more about what off-page SEO is in this article.

Off-page SEO refers to ways of improving the position of a website in the search results through actions outside of a website. It does not involve changing or optimising the content on a website. Sometimes, website owners try to write as much high-quality content as possible and optimise their individual webpages for search engines, but they still have no success in SERPs. That is where off-page SEO is useful.

Off-page SEO is the opposite of on-page SEO, which refers to ways of improving the position of a website in the search results directly within the website that website owners have control over. Both types of SEO are equally important. However, it is recommended to optimise pages for on-page SEO first before focusing on off-page SEO.

Off-Page SEO Factors

Search engines consider lots of different factors when determining the order that pages come up in the search results page. Even though most of them are based on on-page factors that the website owner has control of, such as web content, keywords, meta descriptions, mobile friendliness, and page speed, search engines also consider additional factors from sources outside of the website.

A good example of an off-page SEO factor is the quantity and quality of external websites that link to a page. Link building is an effective SEO strategy as the number of backlinks a website has is one of the main factors that search engines use to rank pages. The website owner can gain backlinks through guest posting, reciprocal links, citations on their website, and broken link building.

Unlike on-page SEO, which the website owner has full control over, the website owner has little control over off-page SEO factors, such as backlinks. Even though they can ask other people to link to their website, it is not possible for them to control the links on external websites. Off-page SEO factors inform search engines of what other people think of a website and an off-page SEO strategy is helpful for adding trust and authority to a website.
