Be aware of online scams. There are scammers who will promise a large amount of money for very simple tasks, such as filling out data in a form to trick you into giving your details, so that they can sell them or misuse them. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. For more information about money-making scams, see this article.

1. Ads

Ads

If you have a website, this is the most common way to make money from it. Online ads work by advertisers paying to advertise on your website. Each time someone clicks on it, you will get paid a small amount of money, usually a few pennies. You also get paid every time an advertisement is loaded 1000 times, which is known as the RPM (Revenue Per Mille). For example, if the RPM was £4.00 and your website got 10,000 impressions a month, you would earn £40 a month in advertising revenue as £4.00 x 10 = £40.

In order to earn good money from advertising revenue, you will need thousands of visitors per week. Creating good-quality content and getting your site higher in the search rankings is a good tip for increasing website traffic. Backlinks are important for search engine optimisation. This will help your site to get higher in search engines as it will prove that people find your content useful. If you could give a reason for someone to link to your site, that could significantly improve the search ranking of your site. For more information about how to increase website traffic, see this article.

All that you need to do to place ads on your site is sign up for an advertising platform, such as Google AdSense and then place the JavaScript code onto your website. You can choose where to place the ad and the type of ad. But, before placing ads, you will very often have to wait to get approved for the advertising network. This is to prevent malicious and spammy sites from placing ads on their websites.

Obviously, the more ads you place on your website, the better your chances of you getting some clicks and earning money. However, you also do not want to overload your website with ads and cause them to irritate visitors. Also, avoid using too many popup ads that require users to click to continue viewing the page.

Ads are not only for websites. If you develop an app, you can also monetise that with ads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some frequently asked questions about monetising a website with ads.

Can I click on my own ads to generate advertising revenue?

No, advertising platforms often prohibit site owners from clicking on their own ads and clicking on your own ads is very likely to be against their terms of service. They can find out that you have been clicking on your own ads by tracking your IP address. If the IP address of a click is the same as the IP address you used to sign up for the advertising network, they can find out. Also, they won't be able to tell the difference between you clicking your own ads and someone else in your home clicking on them. If they catch you, they may temporarily suspend or even permanently close your account. However, if you accidentally click on your own ads once or twice, they will probably still keep that as an earning but not punish you as long as it doesn't happen constantly.

Do I have to pay to place ads on my website?

No, you shouldn't have to pay to monetise your website with ads and display other advertisers' ads. It should only cost money if you want your ads to be displayed on other websites. In that case, you would be an advertiser and would have to pay publishers based on clicks and CPM (Cost Per Mille), which is how much it would cost you per 1000 impressions.

2. YouTube

YouTube

It is possible to make money from advertising on YouTube. All you need to do is apply for the YouTube Partner Programme. It is a service that YouTube offers that helps people to increase their subscribers and earn revenue. In order to be eligible, you need to have at least 1000 subscribers and 4000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months. Once you are in the programme, you can earn money from ads. You can apply for the program by enabling the monetisation status on your YouTube channel, which can be found by selecting your account icon and selecting "Channel > Status features" on the menu. Then, look for the monetisation tab and if you are eligible, you can click 'enable'.

You can then agree to the YouTube Partner Program terms and select your monetising options. You will be given three options on the page: 'Overlay in-video ads', 'TrueView in-stream ads', and 'Standard in-stream ads'.

Overlay in-video ads appear on a banner during the video window during your YouTube videos. In-stream ads will play a short advertisement before your video is played. You can choose all three options to maximise your advertising revenue, but you have to choose at least one option.

Then, click on 'Monetise my videos' to confirm your enrolment in the programme. Afterwards, you will have to wait for approval from YouTube. As long as you abide by the YouTube community guidelines, you will be approved. Examples of content that will cause you to not get approval for the programme are content that promotes hate, violence, or is sexually explicit.

If you have been approved, you will have a 'Partner Verified' status on your YouTube channel. Your ads should now appear on your YouTube channel and you can start earning money through this programme.

You will have to have an AdSense account to get paid through this programme. You can create one through your YouTube account once you have been approved for the YouTube Partner Programme. Once your account has been set up, you can log in and use your account to keep track of your earnings. You will need a lot of viewers to earn a decent amount of money from ads on YouTube.

You must be 18 years of age or older to sign up for AdSense. If you are under 18, you will have to ask someone who is 18 years of age or older to sign up and collect revenue on your behalf.

3. Sell Stock Photos

Sell Stock Photos

Platforms, such as Shutterstock, iStockphoto, Dreamstime, Alamy, Fotolia, Getty Images, Depositphotos, and Adobe Stock allow photographers to upload and sell their photos, illustrations, vectors, and videos. Every time someone downloads it, they get paid a small amount of money. You will need a good camera and high quality images to increase the chances of individuals and companies to buy from you.

4. Buy and Sell Domain Names

Buy and Sell Domain Names

If you can think of a domain name that is worth a lot (has valuable keywords and is short), you could sell them to someone as a premium domain for hundreds or even thousands of pounds. It is possible that businesses may pay that amount of money for a domain name. In this method, you simply buy a domain name and sell it at a higher price to someone that wants to buy it.

5. Sell Digital Content

Sell Digital Content

Selling digital content, such as eBooks, courses, and software is becoming a common way to make money online, since this type of content can be sold in unlimited quantity. Even though developing software, and writing courses and eBooks is a time-consuming process, if a lot of people buy your eBook, courses or software, you could earn a lot of money.

Platforms, such as Udemy, AccessAlly, Teachable, and Learndash allow people to sell their online courses and earn money. The courses may contain a learning resource (e.g. Full PHP tutorial).

e-Junkie, Lulu, and Createspace are examples of sites that allow people to sell eBooks.

6. Freelancing Platforms

Freelancing Platforms

Freelancing platforms, such as Fiverr, Freelancer, and Upwork allow people to find their own work. People work on projects for other individuals and companies, choose their pay rate, and list information about what they offer. The pay rate may be per project or an hourly rate. Examples of freelance jobs include web developer, proofreading, accounting, graphic designer, photographer, software developer, payroll, and more.

Note: Info Icon

It is free to sign up to Fiverr. However, they take a 20% commission off every sale the seller makes. The seller keeps 80% of every transaction. For example, if a freelance web developer charges £58.46 for a 5-page site, they would only get £46.76 of that amount as: 0.8 x 58.46 = £46.76

7. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is when a company pays someone a commission if their product is purchased by a link on an external website. For example, if a site owner advertised a pair of shoes on their website and a visitor clicked on that link and bought it, the site owner would receive a small commission from the company that sells those shoes. Some well-known affiliate marketing platforms are Amazon Associates and ShareASale. Commission rates vary based on the company, but the site owner will usually receive 5% - 30% of the sale. If someone purchased a very expensive item through one of your affiliate links, you could earn much more money. You can place the affiliate links on your website, YouTube channel, social media page, and other platforms.

Paid Surveys

Paid surveys are when a company pays someone for filling out surveys that contain information about themselves and feedback. People may earn points for sharing their opinion, watching videos, taking offers, searching the web, and more. When they get a certain number of points, they will get paid. Companies pay people for filling out surveys as people's opinions are valuable to them. Some well-known paid online survey sites include Branded Surveys, Swagbucks, Toluna, and Pinecone Research. For most survey platforms, the pay is relatively low per survey. However, your earnings will increase if you keep taking the paid surveys.

Warning: Warning Icon

Be careful when taking surveys on free platforms and only use reputable ones. Some may sell your details to third parties that will misuse it.

9. Donations

Donations

If you have a website, app, or software program that is difficult to make money from, you could consider adding a donate button, where people can choose the amount of money they want to donate. Donations are commonly made through PayPal, a well-known payment method which would attract a great number of donors. PayPal donation buttons can be set up and embedded onto a website here.

10. Sell Unwanted Items

Sell Unwanted Items

The simplest way of making money online and the one that most people are familiar with is selling unwanted items. If you have any unwanted items, such as books, DVDs, and games that you have never used, you could consider selling them on ecommerce platforms, such as Amazon and eBay. Remember to write a good description of the item and proofread it before publishing it. Include relevant images that show the item from different angles. If you have a buyer, make sure to package your product well and deliver it quickly. Fragile items should be properly wrapped up in protective material. Items that take a long time to deliver will leave buyers waiting and can have an impact on your reputation as a seller. Also, items arriving damaged due to being poorly packaged will give a bad impression.

Note: Info Icon

When you have buyers, you can provide good customer service by answering any questions they have as soon as possible and being professional.
