Learn about why your computer abruptly shuts down in this article.

Sometimes, your computer might abruptly shut down without warning. If you regularly use your computer, you have likely experienced this problem and it can be annoying, especially when you have unsaved work. If your computer shuts down, any unsaved work is lost unless it is autosaved by the program. A computer abruptly shutting down without warning is a sign of a problem which needs to be further investigated. Below are 8 reasons why your computer could be randomly shutting down without warning and how to resolve those problems.

This article is designed to help you troubleshoot problems that might be causing your computer to abruptly shut down without warning. If your computer won't turn on at all, then this article does not apply to your issue. See this article for more information on why your computer won't turn on.

1. Computer Overheating

In order to run properly and avoid damage to components, computers need to keep cool and maintain certain temperatures. If your computer overheats, it will automatically shut down without warning to prevent further damage to its components. The motherboard temperature sensor instructs hardware, such as the hard drive and CPU to slow down to avoid further damage. Laptops overheat more often than desktop computers due to their compactness and low cooling power. Computers can overheat for the following reasons:

  • Dust blocking the fans, causing insufficient cooling and airflow.
  • Too many overly intense applications or programs.
  • The computer being placed in direct sunlight for extended periods of time.

Regularly checking that the fans are not blocked with dust, not using overly intense applications or programs, and keeping your computer out of direct sunlight for extended periods of time can help prevent your computer from overheating.

2. Bad Power Supply

If the power supply of your computer is going bad or not working properly, it will cause your computer to abruptly turn off. If the power supply is very hot to touch, it has probably overheated. A malfunctioning fan can cause a power supply to overheat and stop working. If the power supply stops working, the computer will no longer be able to get any power, which will unexpectedly shut down the computer without warning. If the power supply is malfunctioning, you can replace it, but never open the casing of a power supply as it contains capacitors that can carry a strong electrical charge even if your computer is turned off and unplugged for a long time. Continuing to use a bad power supply can cause damage to your computer.

3. Outdated Or Conflicting Drivers

A driver is a computer program that enables the operating system and a piece of hardware to communicate with each other. Outdated or conflicting drivers can cause all sorts of computer problems, such as system crashes, malfunctioning devices, and a slow computer response time. They can also be the cause of unexpected computer shutdowns. To resolve this issue, you should download and install the latest driver for your device models. In Windows, you can go to 'device manager' and look for drivers marked with a yellow exclamation mark.

4. Virus Or Malware Infection

Some viruses and malware are designed to shut down your computer at certain times of the day or when meeting a certain criteria. For example, if you notice that your computer seems to unexpectedly shut down without warning at 10:00 am every day or every time when running a system program, such as Notepad, then a virus might be installed on your computer. In order to resolve this issue, fully scan your computer for viruses and malware using the built-in antivirus or another antivirus that you have got installed on your computer. After the full scan has finished, remove any viruses or malware that it detects and then restart your computer.

5. Failing Hardware Component

Failing hardware components are responsible for causing computers to abruptly shut down. If a specific piece of hardware is incompatible with a computer, this can cause it to run slow, malfunction, crash, and cause it to shut down. To resolve this issue, inspect any hardware components that you recently installed and consider removing them from the computer. If that resolves the problem, then that new hardware component was responsible for causing your computer to unexpectedly shut down without warning.

If you haven't recently installed any new hardware components, then the best thing to do is to remove any non-essential hardware components that are not necessary for the normal functioning of a computer, such as the modem, network card, and sound card and see if that resolves the issue.

6. Corrupt Operating System Files

Corrupt operating system files will lead to errors and cause instabilities in the operating system. It can cause your computer to respond very slowly, freeze, and automatically shut down to prevent further damage to your computer. To fix this issue, consider restoring Windows to a time when the problem was not happening. You will get to keep your data and files, but will lose some recently installed programs and software.

7. Problems With The Extension Lead Or Surge Protector

A bad extension lead or surge protector can cause your computer to abruptly shut down. Sometimes, the extension lead or surge protector might not be bad. Too many devices might be plugged into it and if it has a fuse, it will shut down when it overloads. To resolve this issue, make sure that there are not too many devices connected to it. You can test that the extension lead or surge protector works by plugging in a device that you know works, such as your lamp and seeing if it turns on. If not, then the extension lead or surge protector might be bad and need replacing.

8. Fast Startup Mode Enabled

In Windows 10, fast startup mode is designed to make a computer start up more quickly than the normal bootup after a shutdown. However, it prevents the computer from performing a full shutdown and has been linked to random Windows 10 shutdowns. You can prevent this from happening by disabling fast startup mode.
