Learn more about what CHTML is in this article.

Stands for compact HTML. CHTML is a simplified version of HTML designed for smaller devices, such as smartphones and personal digital assistants. Due to the hardware restrictions on smaller devices, such as small memory, low-power CPUs, restricted inputs, limited storage capabilities, small mono-colour display screens, single-character font, and restricted input methods, a simplified version of HTML was required. CHTML does not support some HTML features, such as JPEG images, tables, image maps, multiple fonts and styles of fonts, background colours, background images, frames, and stylesheets.

In addition, CHTML was defined so that all the basic operations can be performed by a combination of four buttons rather than two-dimensional cursor movement. The functions that require two-dimensional cursor pointing, such as 'image map' and 'table,' are not supported by CHTML.

History

CHTML was created by Access Company, Ltd. for use in i-mode devices. In 1998, it was accepted by the W3C. CHTML has been becoming outdated as XHTML has been accepted and replaced CHTML. CHTML is only used for i-mode devices, a service that is only offered in Japan.
