Learn more about what evergreen content is in this article.

Evergreen content always stays relevant, shareable, and fresh for readers, regardless of the time of year, and is not affected by trends, news, a date, or an event. All of the content on this website is evergreen content as it is not time-sensitive and the terminology covered continues to have the same meaning regardless of the season, news, trends, or events and will be relevant well into the future, although it might need updating once in a while.

Even though evergreen content can also be known as evergreen blog posts, evergreen content can be in a video or audio format and is not limited to non-visual content.

Common forms of evergreen content include:

  • FAQ pages
  • How-to articles
  • Wiki pages
  • Case studies
  • Product reviews
  • Top tips
  • Tools and calculators
  • Checklists
  • Buying guides
  • Glossaries
  • Instruction manuals
  • Definition pages

Requirements For Evergreen Content

Evergreen content must be relevant long past its publication date and not expire after a certain period of time. For example, all the pages on Wikipedia are evergreen content as the information will remain relevant years after it has been first published.

Content on news sites is often not considered evergreen because news is very time focused and it is very likely that there will be a decline in interest after a few days or a few weeks. The same goes for statistics that tend to go out of date. Seasonal content, such as an article about Christmas gifts to buy in 2022 with links to products in online stores is not evergreen content because it will receive a spike of traffic around Christmas, but after Christmas 2022, the traffic will greatly drop and it will no longer be relevant in a few years as the links to those products may be unavailable. It will have to be updated every year to direct traffic around Christmas time.

If a piece of content is expected to have a decline in interest and relevance after a certain period of time, such as after an event is finished, it is not evergreen content.

SEO

Evergreen content is good for SEO as it will continue to rank well in SERPs for a long period of time. This will increase the amount of organic traffic a website gets. Even though search engines do not deindex outdated content or content that is no longer relevant, it is much more likely that a searcher will click on a search result with fresh and relevant content. Evergreen content can stay in the search results for years and not be affected by the season, news, or trends. Since they will stay relevant for much longer, website owners can spend much more time optimising the pages through off-page SEO techniques, such as link building.
