FileZilla is a free FTP client used for remotely connecting to web servers to upload and download files that was released on 22nd June 2001 by Tim Kosse and written in C++. FileZilla can be used to connect to a web server by entering the host, username, password, and optionally port number. In most cases, specifying a port number is not required as by default, FileZilla uses port 21, the default port used by FTP. The official site for FileZilla can be seen here.

  • The capability to drag and drop files to upload and download.
  • Support for IPv6, the newer and more advanced version of the Internet Protocol.
  • Support for HTTP, SOCKS 5, and FTP-Proxy.
  • The capability to apply speed limits to put a restriction on the maximum upload and download speed.
  • The capability to overwrite files that already exist.
  • The capability to add uploaded files to the queue, for transferring them later.
  • The capability to configure file permissions.
  • Synchronised directory browsing.

Compatibility

FileZilla is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux. The latest version of FileZilla is compatible with Windows 10, 8, and 7, Linux, and macOS 10.11 or later. Version 3.25.1 (2017-03-20) is compatible with Windows Vista, version 3.8.0 is compatible with Windows XP, and version 3.42.1 (2014-05-08) is compatible with macOS 10.10.

Security

FileZilla supports FTP over TLS (FTPS) to encrypt communications between the client and server, preventing the data from being read by anyone monitoring the connection. In addition, the client can connect to SFTP servers.
