Learn more about what a HAN is in this article.

Short for a home area network, a HAN is a small type of network that is designed to cover a home, as suggested in the name. It is a type of LAN that enables network communication by a router or modem between a range of devices, such as computers, laptops, printers, tablets, smartphones, game consoles, etc. It is designed to be used by a limited number of users.

HANs are only used by the users in a house and the network does not cover multiple buildings, cities, or wide geographical areas, like a WAN. In addition, devices can connect to HANs using multiple wireless and wired technologies, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and more. For example, if a router in a house connects devices by Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or any other technology, then it is a home area network. Faxes and scanners may also be included with a HAN.
