Learn about how often you should blog in this article.

A big question that some bloggers ask is how often they should blog. The answer is that you should blog enough so that regular readers have enough new information to read on a regular basis, but not so much that it takes up all of your time you can't focus on anything else. How often you should blog depends on how much time you have, whether you enjoy it, how large your blog is, how many visitors your blog usually gets, and what you blog about. This article explores how often you should blog, the main factors that you should consider when deciding how often to write and publish new posts, and advice on a blogging frequency.

Factors To Consider When Deciding How Often You Should Blog

Below are the five factors that you should consider when deciding how often to blog.

How much time you have

This is the biggest factor that you should consider when deciding how often to blog. When making this decision, always think about whether you have the time to write and publish those posts. You should consider all your commitments and how much free time you have to blog. If you have lots of free time, then you might be able to blog around 4-5 times a week or every day. If you don't have much free time, then you might consider blogging 1-2 times a week or once a week.

Whether you enjoy it

Another major factor to consider when deciding how often you should blog is whether you enjoy it. People that find blogging enjoyable will usually blog a few times a week or every day. On the other hand, people that don't particularly enjoy blogging, but just blog about a topic that needs information so that they can earn money from ads and affiliate marketing will probably only blog once a week so that they keep their blog going.

How large your blog is

When deciding how often you should blog, you should always consider how many pages it already has. If you have recently started your blog site, you are likely to spend much more time blogging writing and publishing your first few posts so that any readers who find your blog have at least some information to read and it does not look almost empty and abandoned with only a few posts.

Once your blog has a decent number of pages (over 50), you will often spend less time blogging than you did when you started your blog. But, if you have a large blog with over 1000 pages, you will usually need to blog more often as larger blogs with more regular visitors are much more likely to be looking for new posts to read. However, you might also find that you don't need to add new posts as often if your blog is large and can spend time updating previously written posts.

How many visitors your blog usually gets

The number of regular visitors that your blog usually gets per day or week is another factor that you should consider when deciding how often to blog. This is because large blogs often attract visitors of all kinds who are looking for all sorts of different information. The more pages you have, the higher the chances of them finding what they are looking for. Usually, the more visitors your blog, the more often you will need to add new posts, as different visitors may be wanting new posts and updates. However, if your blog only gets a small number of visitors per day, you may not need to blog as often as there will be fewer visitors to make requests for new posts and see your content.

What you blog about

Some types of blogs, especially blogs with time-sensitive information, like news, will need new posts more often. For example, if there is a piece of urgent news, it is important that you blog about it as soon as possible to keep readers informed of the latest news. On the other hand, blogs with evergreen content are not time-focused and there is no rush to quickly write a new blog post that covers an evergreen topic, like a how-to article or definition page that will be relevant long past its publication date.

Blogging Frequency

Below is advice on how often you should choose to blog to help you find which frequency is best for you. If you decide to change your blogging frequency, make sure to notify visitors on your page and not abruptly change it as they might be expecting a new post and could get frustrated if you didn't do what you said you would do.

Every day

If you have enough time, enjoy blogging, and your blog is in need of something new every day, like a blog that contains the latest news, you could consider blogging every day. If you have recently launched your blog and you need to start off with some posts, then blogging every day is best for you. You can also consider blogging every day if you are writing short posts that are designed to support other longer and more detailed posts.

Blogging every day is not a 'must'. If you blog every day, you risk overwhelming yourself and getting so focused on blogging that you don't think about anything else. There is also a risk of you rushing to blog every day, the content being low-quality, leading to a decline in the number of visitors, and making it harder to update old posts. This is why you should think about this carefully. However, if you published every day, it is much more likely to encourage readers to visit your blog every day to read the fresh content, improving visitor retention. If you decide to blog every day, it is recommended to set a time each day when you are most productive to write your blog post to help you stay on track.

4-5 times a week

Publishing 4-5 times a week is a reasonable publishing frequency for most types of blogs. You are not publishing every day, which will give you a break on some days, but you are also blogging enough so that regular visitors have some fresh content to read. If you decide to publish 4-5 times a week, you could consider setting up a publishing schedule so that readers know when they will find new content. For example, you could just blog in the week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) and have a break on the weekend, or you might spend the 2-3 days when you don't blog proofreading and updating other posts.

2-3 times a week

Publishing 2-3 times a week may work when writing detailed and in-depth posts. This is a good medium frequency for well-established and medium-sized blogs. However, blogging 2-3 times a week on a recently launched blog is not usually enough. You will often have to blog more than 2-3 times a week if your blog quickly needs some useful content. If you are looking to increase organic traffic, improve visitor retention, or make money from your blog, you should blog 2-3 times a week at minimum.

Once a week

If your blog does not need new posts that often (e.g. if it is a large post with thousands of posts), then blogging at a lower frequency than average at once a week may be best for you. You can keep readers updated with a fresh piece of content once a week whilst spending most of your time updating and proofreading previous blog posts. Once you have finished updating and proofreading previous blog posts, you can then start posting more frequently. Posting once a week for long periods of time is not usually enough for most types of blogs. That would only be 4 posts a month, or 52 posts a year.

Once every 2-3 weeks

If you have a well-established or large blog with thousands of pages and are temporarily spending time updating your previous blog posts, only posting once every 2-3 weeks may be best just for that time. However, you shouldn't make posting at a low frequency like once or twice a month a habit as this is much less likely to retain previous visitors. Blogging a minimum of 2-3 times a week will help to increase regular website traffic.

Once a month or less

You should only consider posting once a month or less if you are having a break from blogging and want to keep your blog going. Make sure to post a notice on your blog so that visitors know that you will only be posting once a month or less. If you want to keep your blog, we recommend that you don't go any longer than a month without blogging unless there is a very good reason. The risk is that going a few months without blogging could indicate to visitors that your blog is abandoned and no longer maintained, which will result in a great drop in website traffic. It could also take a while to get your visitors back when you start blogging again.
