A user account is an identity created by a person which allows them to use a computer system, network, or information service. A user account contains a unique username, which is combined with a password or other authentication method, which allows the user to log in. A user account is the most common way to restrict access to confidential information, authenticate to a system, and access resources. For example, webmail uses user accounts to allow users to save their own emails and settings, and prevent unauthorised access.

Some computer systems and networks are single-user systems and do not need to make use of user accounts. However, multi-user systems, allow several users to identify themselves with the help of a user account and password. Any computer system, network, or information service with multiple users requires user accounts.

By default, operating systems only have one user account. If a computer needs to be shared with other people, each person can have a separate user account. This will allow them to store their own files, settings, and preferences without affecting other users.

Types Of User Accounts

When it comes to operating systems, there are several types of user accounts. Different user accounts have different access levels, which define the tasks they can do. Examples of user accounts include:

  • Standard user account - By default, standard user accounts have no special privileges. They can perform most everyday tasks, like creating and editing documents and browsing the internet, but cannot alter the permissions of other users, install and uninstall software, or make changes to the system settings that will affect other users.
  • Administrator account - An administrator user account has all privileges. They can make changes that will affect other users and have the authority to do almost anything. This includes altering the permissions of other users, making changes to all system settings, and accessing all system files.
  • Guest account - A temporary account that grants someone access to a computer, but erases all user data after logging out. A guest account does not require a password and lets other people use a computer without being able to change settings, install apps, or access private files.
