Learn about what a vlog is in this article.

Short for a video log, a vlog is a type of blog that consists of video content. Most vlogs combine video content with text and images but some may be entirely video-based. People often create vlogs on YouTube, which offers free video hosting, allowing vloggers to post unlimited videos without needing to pay fees. Vlogs can be created for education, for information, or for fun.

People who create vlogs are known as vloggers. Vloggers usually create video content that is focused on a specific topic or theme, like technology, travel, sport, beauty, cooking, etc. This helps to gain an audience more quickly than vlogging about a bit of everything. Vloggers often share information about their personal experiences, feelings, opinions, and lives.

How Are Vlogs Created?

Vlogs can be created by anyone. All they need is a good internet connection, a video camera or a screen recorder. Users don't need to create their own websites to start a vlog. Most vloggers upload videos on YouTube and Vimeo to make their videos easier to find by other people, since those sites are already very popular.

To start a vlog, users create a channel on YouTube or Vimeo. Once they have a channel, they can start posting content. Vloggers can publish videos as often as they would like, but most post at regular intervals, like every day, every week, or once a month. This helps viewers know when new videos will be available, encouraging them to continue visiting the vlog.

Once vlogs are created, vloggers should monitor the engagement metrics. These display things like views, clicks, subscribers, traffic sources, and watch time. This can help spot trends and allow vloggers to see which videos are performing well and which ones are not performing as well.

Monetisation

If a vlog is successful, vloggers can monetise it with ads or affiliate marketing. With advertising, advertisers place ads on the video content and vloggers earn money each time someone clicks through an ad. Affiliate marketing is when someone advertises a product on their website. If someone clicks through the link and makes a purchase, the vlogger will earn a small commission from whoever sells that product.

For example, YouTube allows vloggers to make money from advertising on the YouTube Partner Programme. It is a service that YouTube offers that helps people to increase their subscribers and earn revenue. In order to be eligible, vloggers need to have at least 1000 subscribers and 4000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months. Once vloggers are in the programme, they can earn money from ads.
