Instead of having a stable release, the release process is like an ongoing dribble of updates and versions to fix bugs and other errors that can affect security and productivity. Dribbleware is one stage beyond vapourware.

Dribbleware means that users must wait for essential features and improvements to be added progressively, which can frustrate them and harm the overall user experience. However, dribbleware allows developers to launch their product quickly, gather feedback from users to prioritise features, and avoid the risk of developing unneeded features. This means that dribbleware can become fully functional over time as developers continue to work on their products, release updates, and add new features.

Causes Of Dribbleware

The causes of dribbleware are:

Pressure to release software as soon as possible - Developers may be rushed to release software as soon as possible by other users, especially if they have been waiting for a long time. They may also rush to release it by a specific date so that it is available before competitors. This can lead to poorly designed software applications.
Complexity of software - Software can be complex to develop and some bugs may not be discovered until it is released to users. After release, it will require several patches or fixes to work how it should have upon release.

Examples of dribbleware include:

Early access video games - These are released to the public in app stores, even though they are not yet complete. Developers usually provide updates or new content whilst gathering feedback from players to improve the game.
SaaS products - Cloud-based products that are released with limited functionality and are constantly updated with new features and functionality whilst available to other users are considered dribbleware.

Difference Between Dribbleware and Beta Software

Dribbleware is not to be confused with beta software. Beta software may contain bugs or performance issues and lack features that will be included in the final release, but unlike dribbleware, it is not officially released to the public and does not always involve a dribble of updates before the software is fully functional.
