Learn about what web publishing is in this article.

Web publishing, also known as online publishing, refers to the process of publishing content on the internet. This includes developing and uploading websites, updating webpages, and blogging. The content for web publishing can include text, videos, images, animations, and other forms of media. Web publishing itself consists of business, personal, and community websites.

Posting updates on social networking sites is not considered web publishing. This is considered microblogging. Instead, web publishing refers more to uploading content to unique websites.

Requirements For Publishing Content

In order to publish content on the internet, the following is required:

  • A web server to store the uploaded files. Web server space is usually provided by a web hosting provider and can be a shared space, a semi-dedicated server, or a fully dedicated server. The type of server depends on the size of the website and how many resources are needed.
  • An internet connection to connect to the web server.
  • Software for developing websites. The software can be a simple HTML editor, like Notepad, or a professional software for developing websites, like Adobe Dreamweaver.

Advantages and Disadvantages Of Web Publishing

The advantages of web publishing are:
  • It does not require any physical materials, such as paper or ink. This makes it cheaper and better for the environment to publish content on the web.
  • The audience is unlimited since content posted on the web can be viewed by anyone around the world at any time with an internet connection.
  • Content can be easily updated at any time without the need to reprint any copies.
The disadvantages of web publishing are:
  • Not everyone has internet access. People without internet access are at a disadvantage as they do not have access to content posted on the web.
  • Web content requires a source of power to access, such as a battery or electricity. If the battery ran out or there was a power outage, it would not be possible to access the web content.
  • It can be difficult to reach the right people due to the massive number of webpages already published on the internet. There is a lot of competition online and getting the target audience to find web content is not always easy.

Difference Between Web Publishing and Web Hosting

The main difference between web publishing and web hosting is that web publishing is the process of creating web content and uploading it to the internet, whilst web hosting is a service provided by a web host that allows users to make their websites accessible on the World Wide Web by allocating them with server space that runs web server software to store their website files.
